a perfect breakfast...

...seems to be a great metaphor for how I feel about starting a new calendar year with a wish list firmly in place. It feels like an unexpected and inspirational fresh start to what might otherwise blend into a predictable day. A good breakfast for me has a way of framing that days outlook towards the positive + seeing the routine with fresh eyes. It is those random Tuesdays when we wake up, the sun is shining and we get out of bed early to sneak in a hot, delicious breakfast at a favorite spot by the water that tops the list of favorite moments.

While I have never really been a fan of New Year's Resolutions, something has shifted in the past few years. Becoming owners of a 1925 Bungalow with no shortage of projects, I have begun to see life in terms of fresh starts. If given the platform (and I have definitely been cut off in the past!) , I would talk endlessly about ways to give a different corner of our home a new look, new feel and making it more our own. It has also extended into trips we hope to take, business plans we hope to realize and ways to make our home and community a better place to be.

Those tattered notes are fun to look back on with everything from 'host more gatherings' to 'hang mop hooks'. Those lists somehow give me calm feeling of positive progress- whether realized or not, just the act of writing it seems to put in motion an intention. Just last week I came across our 2011 list (I made Mike write one, too despite his teasing about my 'conceive, believe, achieve' spirit around this time of year ) and while a few wishes came and went, we absolutely made a few biggies happen, too. Turns out, writing down dreams and hopes really does have value.

To me, a perfect breakfast (thanks for the delicious idea!) is to a new day like a wish list is to a new year. How are you going to start yours?

We were first introduced to Caroline and Withers and their families from Alabama through our friend and colleague Raina.Their excitement was contagious as they flew up to Rhode Island for the weekend and were busily planning the gorgeous destination wedding in Newport. It quickly became clear they wanted a little bit of everything we had to offer...Rehearsal dinner coverage, Vintage Super Eight film, multiple shooters, and both a three and one song highlight. These two are just adorable and we thought we would share their three song highlight... As always, we are grateful for the opportunity to work with some of the industry's best in such a delightful setting. Caroline (what a gorgeous, glowing bride!) and Withers (are you sure you are not Tom Cruise's younger brother?) you are such a lovely couple and your celebration could not have been more perfect. Congratulations in your new lives together!

September is a glorious month in New England. Bluebird skies, warm +dry air, harvest time, foliage changing....just spectacular. We have many lovely couples saying their vows in some pretty incredible settings more this month than any other. All good right? Yes, indeed. But with all weddings ahead and some pretty exciting commercial work on tap- we are going to need a little caffeine.

It was time to invest in the good stuff. After a two day getaway to Maine and popping in on some great coffee shops, we are inspired to ditch our drip coffee maker and convert to the french press. The hope is we trade in the endless lazy refills of tepid, lukewarm coffee to find our inner Zen-like barista for that one perfect cup of joe.

A mix of inspiration and lots of research on Amazon brought us to these three gems and we made the plunge. It feels a bit indulgent for our tastes but holds such promise to be the buzz we just may need. We will keep you posted!

Atleast I am predictable. I realized a familiar panic set in just today. All it takes is one overcast day and I have visions of Fall turning into a long winter. August is just around the corner and we better get on our bucket list of things to do to take full advantage of a gorgeous New England summer before it is gone. Sound familiar? Maybe because I blogged about it last year almost to the day! Like I said, at least I am predictable.

In a perfect world, all things beachy would be carefully edited down and hand selected {reality: we use the same early eighties cooler and well worn beach towels} like the beach blanket I have mentioned before. Alas, these beach canopies, found here from Hollie & Harrie might just be worth the international shipping to jump start the inspiration! Here's to soaking in summer this August!

Sometimes our lucky stars align so beautifully. Perfect September afternoon in the Hamptons at the Wolffer Estate Vineyard to film the wedding of our dear friend and colleague, Raina to the love of her life, Guy.

The feel was classic elegance meets rustic charm and with the warm breeze and the Autumn bluebird skies, the day could not have been more picturesque. Raina naturally thought of every last detail to create a magical vineyard affair. But it was the glow of true love that made this event truly shine. Couples are inundated with choices for weddings. Not just location and date but what is the style, flow and decor for the big day that will perfectly reflect who they are as a couple and what they value? Are they more drawn to the rustic elegance of an autumn wedding at a vineyard, a classic beach vibe in Summer or an urban black tie affair in Winter or Spring?

Wedding films are no exception. Many more of our clients are incorporating vintage Super 8 into their films or even dedicating one full highlight to the sixties, nostalgic charm of this medium. Every couple is so different and unique and we love the challenge of finding new ways to share this through our shooting, editing and song choices.

We thought we would share three recent films to give you a sense of the way we incorporate Super 8 into three very different days.

Jenna + Aaron: Vintage, old world charm for their garden party

With a team of some very talented vendors including gorgeous photography from Carla Ten Eyck, stunning florals from Datura , delicious menu from Gourmet Galley, Jenna and Aaron hosted a quintessential garden party by the sea, Harkness Park. With many traditional elements and the simple elegance of their day- they were drawn to having one complete highlight in the simplicity of Super 8.

Courtney + Justin: Urban, sixties rock + roll in the city

The black and white film and classic rock gave Courtney and Justin's highlight a decidedly edgier feel for their downtown celebration (with photography by Vicki and Erik at Victoria Souza at the Society Room in Hartford.) In this film, we blended the hard edge of the clipped vintage film with beautiful images of their day on our Canons. They are a fun couple whose film we hope reflects their spirited wedding!

Jackie + Keith: Classic story telling with a sprinkling of vintage Super 8

Jacki and Keith hosted an elegant affair by the water at the the Glen Island Harbor Club with beautiful images from Candice Jeffrey and their film reflects just a peppering of vintage with what was a beautifully classic and traditional event.

Since this blog began in late 2008, we have rarely gone a week without blog posts, let alone over a month!
This blog is our little friend and we have been terribly neglectful. We missed our cyber journal as it measures our days, weeks and seasons in the studio here at Buzz. We enjoy sharing the projects, the moods, the films and the friends we make along the way. If you are a reader {we love when random comments show we have at least a couple!} , thanks for not giving up and checking back in. We are excited to share some recent film projects in the upcoming posts!

So what took us away for over a month? For starters, Buzz underwent a true overhaul. It continues to be a work in progress but we expanded our square footage, our calendar of events and soon, our staff. We wanted to share a few snapshots from around the studio today. C'mon in...

Our days, in addition to filming and editing full time, are spent trying to solve these puzzling questions...

...where can we find more space for new work stations and 'corner offices'?

...when and what should we hang on the walls of our bright new studio?

... where do we store everything needed for the ever-expanding life at Buzz?

... how do we not lose sight of life balance {family, music, friends, down time}?
Suffice to say, we have not answered those questions, just found more to ask. But we are working on it. And all that time, apparently, kept us from blogging.

In late April, we headed to The Plaza in NYC for a very elegant affair headed up by the very talented event designer and friend Raina Dawn along with photographer Christian Oth. A beautiful Spring day in New York City was the perfect way to kick off the season! The film to follow but here are few iphone photos from our day of shooting.

girl's weekend: nyc!

For the past few years, every winter or early Spring my dear girlfriends from my former life in Boston all get together for a weekend getaway. Looking forward to this weekend is the fuel that gets many of us through those long {short} dark {very} days of February. There is nothing like the warmth, laughter, good food and hugs with old girlfriends to recalibrate the soul.

This past weekend was the 2011 getaway. Thought I would post our two-day excursion if you are planning your own getaway before your big day. Some of these finds might be perfect for a big city bachelorette celebration!

The first night, we stayed at our girlfriend's brownstone outside the city and indulged in her warm hospitality and roomy accommodations. Kathryn is the quintessential foodie {factoid of the weekend: did you know there were actually six taste senses? Sweet, spicy, sour, salty, bitter and...umami---we came to learn that is the savory flavor and unofficial sixth taste sense} and we indulged in the largest selection of cheeses, eclectic crackers, olives, flatbread pizzas and lots and lots of wine. With this group of ladies who work in all sorts of interesting industries, we still hold up Kathryn's former job as a buyer traveling worldwide for Trader Joe's as the coolest of all possible professions.

The next morning, we woke up to bright sunshine streaming in her place with what must be 10 foot windows and ceilings a mile high. I felt like I was in Europe. Maybe it was how she steams her milk for coffee and served up the most delicious cranberry nut bread, fruit salad, greek yogurt and big,fat mugs of coffee. The sun was shining, the temperatures warm--Spring weekend forecast delivered!

We headed into the city and booked one night at Cooper Square Hotel near SoHo and the East Village. I cannot say enough about the wonderful customer service at Mr. & Mrs. Smith Hotels. With seven girls splitting the cost of two double/double rooms, we could afford to shop at this site with a small portfolio of amazing high-end boutique hotels worldwide. The hotel beds were like clouds {no creepy worries about NYC hotel beds in this place!}, the views were amazing, the showers divine and the champagne check-in was just our style.

That day we spent walking all around Downtown (NoLita, East Village, West Village, SoHo) with a few simple goals. Yummy lunch, mani/pedis and some casual window shopping. After lunch and mojitos at a delicious Cuban restaurant, we ended up at Spazio Nail salon and were, sadly, very unimpressed. Didn't find out until now it was such an 'it' place but when the entire mani/pedi takes about 15 minutes and are asked to wait outside with your toes barely dry, not sure if we care that Sienna Miller got pampered there, too! With so many inexpensive and wonderful salons on every corner in New York, you may want to avoid this one unless it is a quiet Tuesday in January. Regardless, we went on our way with shiny toes in search of a coffee and a late afternoon sugar fix. Billy's Bakery with cinnamon carrot cupcake, cream cheese frosting and a latte was just the way to boost the spirits.

Kathryn is newly engaged and in the midst of dress shopping. It was a thrill to meet the dress designer in her darling bridal shop Saja. We met the lovely Yoo herself and she recognized the bride-to-be from a connection they had in Los Angeles! Her dresses are so ethereal and light and I had coincidentally blogged about it here before.

We ended the night with 9:30 reservations {yep, we weren't sure we would make it} at Public. Delicious. The weekend concluded with a fat brunch, tired eyes {I can't remember the last time I was up until 3AM sleepover party style} and missful for our 'others' who make these getaways possible and such a wonderful reason to head home.

It is so special when life takes us in all directions with all different lifestyles {from single in the city, to engaged and newlyweds, to married for nearly a decade with little ones in the 'burbs} some things never change. The laughter, comfort, support and kindness of good girlfriends is truly food for the soul.

As a follow up to my last post about getting Lucy involved in decorating our space, I just saw these today from Blueprint Bliss.

About a year ago for some funky interior inspiration, I bought this book. The cosmopolitan husband and wife team {with homes from downtown in Chelsea to beach houses in Brazil} are masters at eclectic + chic, open and family-friendly spaces with kids framed artwork completing the look.

Spring?

This weekend was gorgeous. Budding daffodils, bright blue skies, soft breeze+ cherry blossoms peaking out of their winter slumber. Then today, not so much. Misty, grey and well, a little Monday chill. This inspiration board is just so pretty from 100 Layer Cake. Loving saffron yellow and those grapefruit pinks in that gorgeous painting in the board, while doing my best to appreciate those first fickle days of Spring.

The official 'Studio Expansion' project is well underway here at Buzz. We will likely not have the complete 'before and afters' until early Summer but these bold, spring colors are an inspiration. Our aesthetic definitely leans towards the muted grey/tans, white trim, lots of sunshine and hardwood floors. The hope is we find a few oversized art pieces with our spot lighting to give it a pop. Unfortunately, original art might just may take a little longer to find {read: budget}. I spotted this great piece, tracked down the gallery via SFgirlbythebay and realized, as happy and beautiful as it is, the $4000 they were asking might be better spent on the latest camera lenses...baby steps.

Given how colorful and free-spirited the artwork is, it seems like we may be able to put Lucy on that task? Have you ever taken on art projects to finish a space within budget? Any ideas warmly welcome!

Another gorgeous September evening wedding with some of our favorite vendors---the culinary genius of A Thyme to Cook, the gorgeous photojournalistic style of Maggie Conley Photography, the vibrant and rustic florals from Hana Floral and the idyllic setting, Jonathan Edwards Winery at Harvest time.

Filming the elegant and oh-so-in-love couple, Jamie + George made this wedding just about perfect. We so appreciate the notes of gratitude that absolutely capture why moving images are so important on the wedding day. "We love it! I love the music that you used (especially The Rolling Stones ;) I love the way that you can hear the conversations in the background.. the tone that you set for each scene....we are so happy that we will have these memories forever and to pass on to our children. When I think of my wedding day I now have the images of my grandparents dancing and the smiles on our friends and families' faces in my mind...."

We are so grateful that time and again our professional and personal worlds overlap and we get to take on yet another client and project we can pour our heart into. This short film is a perfect example. Last Saturday night we got to debut this short film to a warm audience of Case Club members at the annual Winemakers Dinner. Take a moment to relax into this nine minute Buzz film showing what makes this boutique winery so special. And it is not just the delicious wine.

elements of fudge.

How lucky are we? Amidst the never-enough-time-in-the-day-to-pause-and-reflect moments in the studio, we got mail that was thoughtful, creative, homemade and just because. This happy winter package arrived at our doorstop from the talented folks at Elements Design. They are a fantastic design firm on the Connecticut shoreline that just gets it. Their portfolio speaks for itself. The work is elegant and diverse. Their blog is well written, relevant and fresh- pulling in all different 'elements' that make for good design, smart marketing and solid inspiration.

We snapped this photo from their February Giveaway---the package consisted of a nice note, an adorable metal lunch box, rustic flannel pouch, clever Elements pencils and the most delicious homemade (with hand-stamped packaging ) Fudge. Fresh fudge arriving in the mail on a random Wednesday? This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Thank you, Elements Design!

We have been a bit quiet on the blog front this week finishing up one exciting commercial project (think wellness, yoga and cooking inspiration) and starting another (think wine, relaxation and farm life) and look forward to sharing the finished projects in the coming weeks. The past two weekends have included travel to Boston and Newport to meet clients and finishing up some gorgeous weddings from the summer. February has been busy and our hunch is March will come in like a lion and out like a lamb. Buzz has got our sights set on April daffodils, warm earth and a moment to breathe before the next high season!

In all the winter hustle (sadly, no time for vacation this year), this quote is inspiration for keeping it all in balance. While not necessarily a fan of inspiration books- this one has been a great nightly read on just this sentiment.

winter white + sheepskin

With all the ways we hope to continually upgrade our 1920s Bungalow, this was not necessarily on top of must-have list. But for some time, I have been drawn to sheep skins. They warm up a space as little area rug in a nursery or flopped on the back of a sofa or underneath a coffee table to give a room warmth and texture. As a style, I definitely lean towards white on white, organic elements{like driftwood} with modern and pops of color- so a sheepskin throw fits right in! When I came across this eco-friendly {come to find out it means they are tanned without using harmful chemicals} Icelandic company called Black Sheep {white light}, I decided to go for it. It arrived a bit ago and it smells so clean and fresh {think the woods in winter- fresh but no real scent} and is really warm against the back of the couch. If sheepskin appeals to you at all- this is sure to be a happy purchase for under $150. While it has nothing to do with films or weddings,sure has a lot to do all things cozy and warm. Which could be a wedding film. So it relates, right?

This is the location of my head this sunny but cold January Monday. These are from the lovely Rosewood Mayakoba in Riviera Maya, Mexico.

An all-inclusive getaway with yoga on the beach, grilled seafood and spa treatments seems about perfect to me lately. As a hit-the-road, submerse-in-the-culture, major-in-foreign-language kinda girl this is not my typical preference. But after a long New England winter, these images are calling my name. More research to share on some of the best deals, the best reviews and the best pricing I find. Might be useful to those of us out there who need a pre-moon, a honeymoon, a destination wedding or simply, a long overdue reason to completely unplug. With projects on deck straight through until early April, booking a trip in Spring could make this busy season {wait, I thought May-October was busy season?!} fly by. Need more inspiration? Nearly two feet of the fluffy stuff when we woke up today! Since we missed the last big Nor'easter when we were down south over the holidays, it was a welcome snow day to settle in, make a monsterous breakfast of banana pancakes and bacon and later bundle up in search of the perfect sledding hill.

Every January, for the past few years we have been lucky enough to head to Manhattan for an overnight. It is a great time with the holiday crowds gone and the perfect season to find a window seat in a new restaurant and watch the world go by. We have no plans yet to head to the Big Apple this month as we are filming a wedding next weekend and so busy finishing up 2010 projects. But we may have to start putting the wheels in motion for later in the month. Until then, this gorgeous wedding at the Foundry has me wide-eyed. How gorgeous is that Vera Wang gown and her pretty upswept hair?

Admittedly, we are doing pretty well on day four of 2011. We headed to the gym at the crack of dawn this morning, baked homemade wheat bread last night and put our shopping list on an excel spreadsheet with multiple copies in our newly organized junk drawer. We even spent time over dinner jotting our top five goals/resolutions list on a napkin. So it should feel good, right?

Sorta. But after seeing this, it may be time to scrap the top five list and take Ghandi's lead on this one. Seems to have all the resolutions we need to make this year even more rewarding and meaningful than the last. Happy 2011, everyone.

We just returned to the studios today from a very tropical Christmas with the family down South. We had a wonderful time away and are rejuvenated as we gear up for 2011. Before we bid farewell to twenty ten (you have been good to us 2010!) we thought we would share our holiday card with our Buzz friends and family.... a lively short film of a day in the life of our family.

As the last official shopping weekend before Christmas, it would really be so pretty if we could cue the white stuff on say, Thursday. This photo just has me ready. Was I the only one disappointed that the 'big storm' forecasted has been downgraded and will pass us by here in Connecticut? I love the excuse to slow down and do snowstorm kinda stuff {as in, nothing between mugs of hot cocoa}. How perfect was that last year?

As our sporadic posts suggest, we are in full holiday swing. The studio is buzzing {sorry} with activity, creative plans for 2011 and wrapping, lots and lots of wrapping. We are wrapping up more than just gifts this year. A final wrap on many projects and the close of 2010. There are so many clients and new friends to be grateful for as we reach the end of a very rewarding 2010.

We thought we would take pause to share a recent short film. This one is special. We blogged about Katie and Tucker's ten year vow renewals a few months ago. Sure, it was a perfect beach sunset in Nantucket, intimate gathering and a festive reception at a fantastic Mexican bistro in town. But it is how this highlight {done exclusively in Vintage Super 8 film} shines a light on the real beauty of marriage found in family, simplicity, joy and gratitude. As the hectic 'keeping up' pace has a way of consuming us all during the holidays, this is a gentle reminder of what it should all be about.

We found new friends in Katie and Tucker and are so grateful they shared their meaningful, intimate celebration with us.
It is worth taking a moment to pause and reflect on your own family and friends by watching this to the end- and you may just tear up a little. We did.

We are big fans of the banana pancake breakfast. Some of my favorite family moments happen in our kitchen on Sunday mornings. This film short from Jamie Oliver and his two daughters Poppy and Daisy {cute names!} to me is perfection. Casual, silly pancake tutuorial to get in the holiday kitchen mode. While it may not be the Martha Stewart perfection it wins for being inclusive, delicious and all about family. I especially love Jamie's rumpled shirt, bed head and ways he makes his girls giggle.

I am in love with this story, this writing and this sentiment found here. If you are a bride to be, I think this is the true inspiration.

The night my husband and I met for the very first time, he asked me to marry him. I answered “Sure!” Because I felt quite sure I could spend the rest of my life listening to him talk to me. He had this accent that I couldn’t quite place. It was a blend of East coast, Midwest, a year studying in Europe, and thug Italian. It was devastatingly cool. Still is.

A few years later, we eloped to Nantucket; my dad had died the summer before, and neither of us could imagine such a day without him.

I wore a J. Crew dress long before they sold wedding attire. We remembered all our documentation, but forgot rings and the shoes over which I’d obsessed for months. Too bad, because they were perfection.

I forgot my something old and something blue, but my boy assured me that the blue of my eyes would do nicely. And the old would be what we’d grow together.

In the end, I can tell you none of the details mattered. There was no letterpress, no photo booth, no first dance jitters, no calligraphied place cards, no bouquets, and no color scheme except the blue of the sea and the green of the lawn at the Wauwinet. And, yet, there was so much more.

The night before we wed, my husband-to-be picked the perfect spot for our vows. They were simple; I promised to make him laugh every day and he promised to want to talk to me every day, and we both promised to choose each other for the rest of our lives.

Three lovely daughters and years and years later, I still count that day as one of our most perfect, clutter-free moments. It was me and him on the edge of an island, promising to try our best to live our best. Together and forever.

This morning, I shook him awake thirty minutes early. “It snowed last night!” I whispered excitedly. He jumped out of bed and looked out the window with the glee of a ten-year old kid. Then realized I’d been teasing him.

“After all these years, I still fall for you.” He said, shaking his head and laughing.

Okay. In all honesty, that wasn’t his exact quote. It ended more like
“…I still fall for your bull*#@!” But I knew what he meant. And it still thrills me to make that boy laugh.

Last year, we hosted 20 people in our new {old} house. We were just reflecting last night, 2009 was one of our favorite Thanksgivings in recent memory. A lot of work. A lot of fun. This year, sure we are making a few side dishes but we are going to make the 2 mile circuit to Mike's sister's house, my sister's house and a pop in on some friends en route. When we get a chance to host again, I am all over this decor. It has a lot of my favorites---Home Goods craftiness, metallic spray on pumpkins, wide pin-stripes and organic and sparkly all at once. The story behind this photo shoot and tablescape is here. I particularly like how creative smarts and family-friendly casual can sometimes go together in a photo shoot.

There is so much to be thankful for this year....made even more sweet by moments when we got a wake-up call to recalibrate and focus on the essentials- health, family, friends and a warm home.

On a grey and rainy November day, we thought we would get back to the Buzz business at hand and share this vibrant and colorful wedding from this summer. Cassandra and Bimal brought together their cultures and artfully integrated special touches in their food, decor, dress and traditions to give a nod to their heritage and family. And the dancing and music got people of all ages on their feet. A festive celebration in the truest sense of the word!

As with this short film, we are getting more and more requests for the three song highlight. This montage chapters their celebration and lends a different mood and feel to each part of their day. I love this new twist on the paper latern--small paper mache' swatches glued on to the side for a modern twist. Bridesmaids that lean towards crafty might like this excuse to all get together, have some wine and update the classic paper laterns for the big day.

Head down and projects galore this week. So we took the chance to relax on Sunday and tool around sunny Rhode Island in search of the perfect pumpkin experience. Lucy was thrilled with what we stumbled across---Shartner Farm. Yep, thats the name. Our take, the kids love it {hayride, corn maze, donuts} but a bit of an overpriced scene. But because Halloween rivals Christmas on the list of kid favorites, we went for it and took the Super 8 camera along.

Rhode Island is a little state chock full of treasures. For years, I have had this small Rhode Island bible called eat.shop.rhode island. It really is a carefully curated guide that does what is promises "an indespensible guide to stylishly unique, locally owned eating and shopping." This is one in a series of guides from some twenty different cities and regions around the country. The photojournalistic images and short, fun descriptive essays will make you want to hit the road in search of these treasures.

golden lamb buttery.

Connecticut and Autumn just go together. A drive in the country is something we rarely make time for but with a destination like the Golden Lamb Buttery it is the perfect excuse to hit the road. This past Monday on a recommendation and a misty grey day, my parents, sister and I headed out for lunch to this quiet little treasure in Brooklyn, CT.

This first photo from Sarah Yates Photography reignited my post and beam barn obsession and how I have been meaning to share this Connecticut treasure with you all.

The remaining photos are of the Buttery where warm hospitality and genuine home-cooked, locally-sourced and organic foods are a given. The meal was just the right balance of haute cuisine and comfort food, the lunch prices were very reasonable (soups, entrees, glass of wine and two desserts for four for about $100) and the setting and the experience just felt authentic. {ie: you walk right through the kitchen on the way to your table like you are at a friends house}. And after lunch, the sweet town of Putnam known for antiques and charm is a short drive away. Known as the 'quiet corner' of Connecticut, this is just the kind of quiet we all may be craving this Autumn!

No wonder we are a bit tired and fighting the annual 'back-to-school' colds. Took a moment to download iphone photos this morning only to realize how busy the last few weeks really were. We are grateful September has taken us around the region. We headed out to the Hamptons for a wedding at Wolffer Estate Vineyard, New York City for an art opening with hosted dinner in SoHo after to celebrate talented artist {and client... collaborated on a promotional film short documenting his work+story} and managed to film five weddings in between! We look forward to sharing our work in the coming months. The candids of these moments {along with home improvements, first day of school and lazy Sundays on the deck} make up the iphone photo moments in our September. What are yours?

It is funny how weddings have almost become a family business.

My smart, beautiful and modest cousin is wisely taking the sweet route to the wedding industry. After graduating Princeton, she decided to pursue her true passion of all things pastry. This led her to the Culinary Institute in Napa and she settled in Northern California. When our wedding plans were starting to take shape a few years ago, Simran graciously volunteered to make our wedding cake. With a few questions from her and very little input from me, she made exactly what I pictured for our seaside wedding. It had the most classic lines, beachy feel and absolutely delicious. {underneath that cream fondant was the most rich dark chocolate and rasberry ganache!}

As a very DIY wedding, her help that day {literally} takes the cake. She researched and tested different ideas leading up to our wedding. When the time came, she prepared and froze the cake layers and packed them in carry on for her long flight from Northern California to southern Florida! She spent the entire wedding day in the kitchen preparing, baking and sculpting the final touches. It was perfect. Such a memorable and meaningful gift to both of us.

Simran has worked for some of the finest culinary leaders in the industry and at a range of world class locations including French Laundry, Cyrus and now in Beverly Hills working for the Thomas Keller Restaurant Group. Although our family has a few culinary accomplishments {my mom has several published cookbooks} Simran is definitely the most well-schooled foodie in the bunch!

And now Simran's sweet new business, Swinkels Cakes is getting some great press! Way to go, Sim.

If you are considering a dedicated, creative and yes, sweet pastry chef for your wedding, Swinkels Cakes might just be the one.

Thanks Earl for being all bark and no bite. The hurricane heading up the Eastern seaboard yesterday got downgraded to not much more than heavy rains. It left in its path a gorgeous Saturday.

Buzz is headed out to one of our favorite spots, the Ocean House to film Caitlin and George's wedding. They could not have ordered up a more lovely day. Having a cocktail on the big wrap around porch to enjoy the crashing surf, blue skies and light breeze? About perfect. Thanks Earl.

Beautiful forecast ahead. What are your plans? We are working + filming some great events this weekend, but feeling a bit 'missful' that this is the last official weekend of summer. Sure, there is Labor Day weekend, but when kids go to school on Monday {rude! can't they just wait another week?} to me, that marks the end of 'lazy days' of summer.

But enter September... one of the most gorgeous months in New England. Indian Summer days turn to cooler Autumn evenings. The sun is warm but a blanket is welcome for outings after sunset and the sky turns a deeper shade of blue. The summer pace here in Mystic slows and locals return to patron the restaurants and shops after the tourists are gone.

As the seasons shift, we hope you enjoy the final weekend in August and soak in the last of the true summer skies.

How beautiful are those first warm days of April and May when the first pop of color---a pink cherry blossom, yellow daffodils and lavender tulips look even more hopeful and bright against the subdued skies? A time of year representing hope, possibility, new life and fresh beginnings. Is there a season that is a more perfect metaphor for a wedding day? This past weekend, Buzz was lucky enough to film a very special vow renewal for Tucker + Katie on Nantucket. Anything that combines sunset on an island beach, 40 of your closest friends and family and gourmet Mexican food in a restaurant with an urban vibe has my vote as the perfect way to celebrate! We look forward to sharing the film short in the coming months.

The sorbet colors in the sky were the perfect backdrop for their vow renewals on the beach. The ceremony was led by the same minister who officiated their wedding ten years ago. He introduced the adorable brother and sister (9+7) who proudly projected the words from their sweet readings to their parents. The gathering of friends+ family circled around them and clapped as the kissed and the sun dipped into the sea.

Photo booths, high spirits, raw bars and top shelf tequila, the most delicious guac ever followed at a NYC-esqe gourmet Mexican bistro Corazon del Mar. I am trying to convince Mike we might need a scouting + research trip to see if we can steal this idea for our ten year anniversary!

We see our fair share of wedding ceremonies. Between the weddings at the winery and the several dozen we film each year, there are some aspects that remain the same. The look of anticipation on the grooms face, the teary and intense eye to eye contact, the nervous laughter, big smiles and tightly held hands. It is so special to bear witness to these moments in peoples lives and watch love come alive in its purest form.

But ah... the kiss. Those are all different. After watching a few ceremonies on film while Mike edits, I've been known to ask if I was too enthusiastic when we kissed at our wedding. Mike responded 'are you kidding me? It was perfect.' But I still wondered, should I have been more demure, more reserved ..maybe given more of a 'lady-like' peck on the lips like I see so often?

Our ceremony was one of my favorite parts of our wedding day. It was so us. There were many moments that stood out: from getting the first glimpse of all the friends and family that traveled so far to be at our destination wedding, to choosing somewhat unique but meaningful processional songs, to giggles and tears I wish I could've controlled, to writing our own vows from the heart and having our dear friend officiate... Even as poignant as these were, most of the ceremony was a blur. I do, though, have a vivid memory of resisting the urge to kiss him for the twenty minutes until cued. When we were finally announced, I got wrapped up in the most warm, sweet and wonderful kiss with my new husband.

Judging from our photos, I was this girl. {and how gorgeous is she in this dress at this location?} I love how she throws her arms around his neck, leans in and gets lost in the moment. So go ahead, make the first kiss together your own-- and when you do those are, hands down, the most perfect kisses.

It happens so reliably every year, there must be a name for the syndrome. When the first of August hits, I start to panic that there are just not enough days left in the summer to do summery things. We are so fortunate to have such a busy high season- this weekend off to the Cape, next to Nantucket and soon a ferry ride to the Hamptons to film gorgeous weddings with talented people and the most gracious and happy clients. It is hard to believe we have already filmed more than ten weddings this season with our busiest months to come!

For all the couples who may be getting married in late Summer/early Fall and also in your own 'busy season', be sure to take a moment to soak in summer before it is gone. Take a pre-moon with your groom {a simple overnight somewhere close by does wonders}, put aside your to-do list for one night and kick back and take in Summer 2010. At least that is the conversation going on in our world these days.

Thanks to daisy chain, I may have resolved my big artwork dilemma for the our tv room. Framing beautiful wallpaper for the perfect, oversized pop of color. This is a great resource for wall paper. There is also this site and this one has great patterns, too.

In my wall decor folder that is getting lots of ideas but no action {winter projects!} I have been storing away Alpha Workshops for more pretty wall paper ideas. Wouldn't three different but related patterns framed in white from their kimono series be so happy and fun?

Buzz was in New Haven this Saturday to document and celebrate Sondra + Ben's big day along with some of our favorite vendors with overall event design + planning lead by the talented Miss Sarah. We cannot wait to see the photos from the husband and wife team at Image is Found- fresh, fun and very LA. We love it. I have long been stalking Flashdance for progressive, alternative and very alive music. And with a DJ named Smiles Davis, how can you go wrong?

This couple is so unique. Their ceremony at Long Wharf Theater was more of clever and heartfelt off-broadway presentation with a gorgeous tented wedding at a private estate to follow. While the photos and film are in the works, here are a few of their hilarious photo booth moments and more found here. Perusing through Facebook last night, I tripped on a great photo album from a former Boston colleague who got married in California this month. Definitely have a love/hate with Facebook but this is one of the real perks. Here is a woman who I shared in fantastic work adventures overseas, office laughs and a mutual love of language and travel {we worked for this company}-yet would likely not have remained in touch. With Facebook, I am able to see her on her wedding day and all the photo captions that get me right up to speed on her life. She gave up a hectic PR/marketing career in the city to move to Northern California to work for a biodynamic farm, meet her husband and later get married right on site.

This is what she said in the caption below a photo of her wedding ceremony location spot.Our ceremony site at Campovida (field of life), a gorgeous arbor of weaving old stock vines of different grape varietals. We thought we originally wanted a church for this ceremony. This magical space filled with dappled sunlight and lush vines was our cathedral...of vines. Couldn't have been more perfect for a couple who loves wine and the earth!

Just took my engagement ring in to be resized slightly smaller {finally, after two years...not sure why I was afraid it would be too tight} Mike's saw my jewelry-less hands and started humming Beyonce's 'All the single ladies, all the single ladies, ah put your hands up'.... While my hands sit here sort of naked until Friday, it does get me thinking about all the pretty ways to chose rings to symbolize a union.

I love {and yes I'll admit it, hate} it when an idea I think is uniquely my own, gets put into action before I get a chance! Leave it to gastronomically advanced Northern California to bring this vision alive. On NPR last week, I had a 'driveway moment' {as they call it when you sit in your car at your destination just to hear the end of a story} listening to this great new concept in food. A group of professional chefs in San Francisco who got disenchanted by the overhead and risk of having a bricks and mortar restaurant decided to bring food to the people, in different funky locations every two to three weeks. The pop up general store is built on the concept of promoting artisanal + organic food companies who may not have the capital or marketing engine to get the word out on their own. Cottage industry meets artisanal yumminess. My kind of business plan.

The Pop up General Store is more than a farmers market. They have an online shop to pre purchase orders, unique locations like Temescal streetcar depot to showcase the hidden gems of the region, a central general store check out and a fantastic line up of cooking classes. They are working on their website, but check out the recipes and descriptions on their blog.

I wonder if they want a new location on the East Coast for their next pop up? I may have just the place.

What was starting to become our dumping grounds when we walked in the door, got a fresh coat of paint and edited down to our favorites. { The favorites included: a vase of the wish stones from our wedding, a stack of my moms own published cookbooks, a wrought iron piggy bank of my fathers from childhood, the globe Mike bought Lucy when she was a toddler to show her the world, a hardcover stack of the poetry books + classics from Mikes dad who was an English professor, framed artwork from the kids and adults in our lives and treasures from traveling.}

This refresh project has a way of clearing the mind and great tribute to the moments that make up our lives and define who we are.

You may remember this adorable couple from their engagement shoot. They are hard to forget. Just one of those young, fresh, creative, gracious and completely in love kind of couples that make what we do so special. In Saturdays mail was the most thoughtful thank you note to Mike and I {I handle the weddings at Jonathan Edwards Winery and Mike was hired to shoot their wedding film} from Meg and Ty. It makes us miss working with them. Their vineyard wedding was perfectly suited to reflect them- vintage elegance and country charm meets urban sensibilities----Anthropologie bridesmaids dresses, plenty of creative DIY details like the "leaf a thumbprint' guest book, hand stitched programs, farm tables and lanterns and the most heartfelt and inclusive ceremony we may have ever heard.

We look forward to sharing their highlight film in the coming months. Once again, Maggie Conley artfully captured their day in photographs with her signature style- heart and humor. It is so nice to end the wedding night with a sweet treat as guests walk out the door. One of my favorites this year was when Chrissy and Mike had a fried dough station as a nod to her Italian heritage...a memorable hot, doughy, powder sugar finish to a great night!

There is no shortage of inspiration at Bakerella.....mini cherry pies, red velvet cake balls, oreo truffles....just a pop of sweetness to linger as you leave the celebration. Brilliant.

Six of my favorite girls from our twenty something days working together in Boston have been planning this gathering since our last one in January. four oh birthday wishes.

The hubs and friends really made me feel special on my fortieth last week. That number can be a bitter pill to swallow, but if this week long celebration is any indication, the forties are gonna be alright. It started on Monday before my birthday with an absolutely out-of-the-blue-surprise birthday party {maybe that is why they are called surprise parties!} with food catered from my favorite local Mexican spot Milagro, yummy marghs, and great friends and family. It concluded a week later with two days in Block Island with the whole family {9 of us in a cottage in town} and girlfriends from childhood.

The forties are a great opportunity to reflect on how you want the second half of life to take shape and being wise enough to know the most beautiful moments come when you dream big, work hard and then just step back and let go. As we finalize another film short to share next week from our shoot in Costa Rica in April, it is impossible to avoid destination wedding fever. I am a big fan of simple, intimate weddings in gorgeous locale with a built in honeymoon/vacation with your guests afterwards! If we had a reason to bring 60 of our favorite people together for a destination experience {is a year and a half too soon to renew our vows?}, we would definitely chose Costa Rica! Our direct flight {New York City to San Jose} was inexpensive, quick and no jet lag {an hour time change} and we were completely transported four hours later to Los Suenos and the gracious hosts from Stay in Costa Rica. As a premiere luxury resort with spas, world class fishing with the beautiful coast and rainforest at your fingertips, you really are giving your guests an experience. All the modern amenities {and a private chef!} in seven room villas would be perfect for groups of 16 {wedding party, immediate family or a group of friends} to rent together. These days with friends and family spread far and wide, it seems half of all wedding guests need to take a flight to a wedding, why not somewhere unique?

So happy with my latest Etsy purchase. I am really into low centerpieces + succulents- these would be perfect for an outdoor wedding on long tables. Monkeys Always Look puts together these charming little pots of succulents. It arrived last week ready to go and the best $50 mid week boost a girl could ask for.

And this wedding in Mexico combines it all---long tables, lanterns + linen, vintage boxes with succulents + color, fruitwood Chivari chairs, flowy bridesmaid dresses all slightly different + a pop of tangerine for the perfect tropical affair.

Behind the Scenes: Costa Rica

We have been a bit remiss in sharing the details of our trip to Costa Rica last month. We almost forgot to post this film short! If your computer can handle it, click full screen and turn it up for full effect. There is so much eye candy from our trip and we are still editing the promotional piece and will share the results in June. What a fantastic group of talented vendors! The passion and excitement is palpable in this piece. It was everything- the somewhat impromptu locale and beauty of dusk in this lush setting, our model Michelle who had never done this before {and fresh off a surfboard} but was as stunning and natural as they come, and all of our our good fortune to be there, in that moment. The collaboration with this group was more easy and inspired than we could've ever hoped. We are still so grateful we had the opportunity to be involved in an editorial shoot to promote a wonderful destination wedding locale, Stay in Costa Rica.

Mike works his tail feather off. Every week is six days of work, one day of rest. And by rest, I mean his seven year old bouncing on him and repeatedly chanting 'daddy, chase me'. He always put his clients, daughter and me before his own needs. This weeks 'day of rest' was spent yet again, doing something for someone else. This time, it was me. We are not elaborate gift givers and focus more on the gestures--so when he asked what I wanted for my birthday, this wish immediately came to mind. I feel so grateful and excited-and a bit guilty. But giddy with excitement, just the same. It means so much that this gift had so much heart {and sweat} go into it.

It is the art of the bookcase. Our country kitchen has a warm, rustic feel and really is the heart of our home. But it has been bugging me that we have a bit too much oak going on. So for two years, I have been nagging to paint our bookshelves white and revamp it for a clean, monochromatic look. After Mike spent the day on the deck in the hot sun sanding, priming, lugging and painting- it looks like these beauties are ready to hang. It is really theraputic to edit out the chaos for whites, tans, neutrals and browns and select just the most meaningful and sentimental to showcase. A little 'this-is-your-life' shrine, of sorts. These photos give some inspiration.

With fixer upper projects all around, it will be a beautiful thing to have at least this wall, finally done. Can't wait to get my hands on it after work today and post a few photos and see what you think!

No detail was missed. They even managed to order up the most perfect, breezy late May evening for the premiere {re}opening and ribbon cutting last night. This five star resort truly embodies classic elegance of days gone by- from the carefully edited selection of artwork, to the grand entryway, the attentive and professional staff, sweeping verandas and panoramic vistas of the crashing surf and Block Island. A few of us had the feeling of being invited onto the christening of a 1920's elegant ocean liner. Mike and I came away from the premiere event just feeling so proud and excited that we lived in a community that was home to this iconic classic. We are in the process of painting our house {there is a God. goodbye teal and purple} and sprucing up our deck. With the cost of doing it right with the best restoration paint company {and pretty great brother-in-law!} it leaves little else in the way of budget for decor. Some of the coveted deck lounges, tables and grill {I love the side burner for corn or lobster to avoid the stove and indoor steam in summer} may have to wait another season. These images are a healthy reminder that the loveliest outdoor dinner parties have nothing to do with having the best furniture. This summer, we may just have to invest in mason jars, eclectic linens and bistro lights instead. Leaves more room to focus on good food and friends....

For Lucy's birthday on Monday, we went into her first grade class to read a story {with Mikes corresponding sound effects downloaded to the iphone} and come up with a related art project. After school, we headed directly to the Mystic Drawbridge for ice cream and finished the day with a family party. The life of a first grader is a beautiful thing....everyone in her class was eager to learn, find silliness in everyday life, enthusiastic to meet new people and hear what they have to say and absolutely confident in their own talents. After all, why aren't Mac photo booth self portraits with distorted faces and goofy effects a part of everyday life in the studio?

...like at this Mexican wedding. There are two favorite styles of mine. Rustic weddings---reclaimed wood, organic elements, masculine simplicity with a feminine dash of simple florals + nature. But then again, modern design is so beautiful when artfully done. Clean lines and pops of color highlighting just two or three combinations {love slate grey and daisy yellow.} When the two styles come together? Perfection.

This wedding from the talented Tec Petaja is a beautiful example of rustic, tropical affair {hand stamped escort cards, burlap runners, rough hewn frames) with a flair for modern elegance {pop of yellow, clean lines in the tablescapes and lounge}.
